Finding that you have been burgled is frightening and upsetting. We’ve prepared a list of the first things to do on discovering a burglary. Later, you can take steps to claim compensation for losses through CT homeowners insurance, but for now your personal safety must be your priority.
- Don’t go inside if you return home and find signs of a break-in. Leave the scene and call police from your cell phone or a neighbor’s phone.
- Stay calm if you encounter burglars in your home. Let the intruders know that they can take what they want and you won’t try to stop them. Observe the intruders and make a mental note of identifying features like height and dress. Call the police as soon as they have left.
- Don’t touch anything or clear up until the police have attended and told you it is okay to do so.
- Make a list of the stolen items.
- Talk to the police about any additional security measures you should take. If the burglars did not force entry but may have had a key, change your locks.
Having helped the police with their investigation and re-secured your home, contact your agent or insurer to report the burglary and start the process of lodging a claim. Your home inventory will help you to check what has been stolen and can be used to support your CT homeowners insurance claim.
